Ingredients

Casserole Base & Spiced Apples
  • 2 cans (12.4 oz each) refrigerated cinnamon roll dough with icing (or equal weight day-old brioche cinnamon buns)
  • 3 cups Honeycrisp or Granny Smith apples, peeled and cut into 1/2-inch dice
  • 2 tbsp unsalted butter
  • 2 tbsp brown sugar
  • 1 tsp ground Saigon cinnamon
Rich Vanilla Custard
  • 4 large eggs
  • 1/2 cup whole milk
  • 1/4 cup heavy whipping cream
  • 2 tbsp pure amber maple syrup
  • 1 tsp pure vanilla extract (halal-certified)
  • 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp freshly grated nutmeg
  • 1/4 tsp fine sea salt
Cream Cheese Glaze & Topping
  • 2 tubs reserved icing from cinnamon roll cans
  • 2 tbsp cream cheese, softened
  • 1 tbsp warm milk (if needed to thin)
  • 1 drizzle pure maple syrup and fresh berries (for serving)

Method

Sauté Apples & Assemble
  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C) and lightly butter a 9x13-inch ceramic baking dish.
  2. Melt 2 tbsp butter in a skillet over medium heat. Sauté diced apples with 2 tbsp brown sugar and 1 tsp cinnamon for 5-7 minutes until tender-crisp. Remove from heat.
  3. Cut cinnamon roll dough into 1-inch pieces. Scatter half the pieces in the baking dish, spoon sautéed apples over top, and finish with remaining dough pieces.
Whisk Custard, Bake & Glaze
  1. In a bowl, whisk eggs, milk, cream, maple syrup, vanilla, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt until smooth. Pour evenly over the casserole.
  2. Bake uncovered for 35-40 minutes until golden, puffed, and set in the center. Whisk reserved icing with softened cream cheese and drizzle warm glaze over the casserole before serving.
