Ingredients
  

Potatoes
  • 4 medium russet potatoes peeled and thinly sliced
Cheese Sauce
  • 4 tablespoons butter for roux
  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour for roux
  • 2 cups milk whole or 2%
  • 1 cup sharp cheddar cheese shredded
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper

Method
 

Prepare the Potatoes
  1. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. Peel and thinly slice the russet potatoes using a knife or mandoline.
Make the Cheese Sauce
  1. In a saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat.
  2. Whisk in the flour and cook for 1-2 minutes until lightly golden.
  3. Gradually whisk in the milk, stirring constantly until the sauce thickens.
  4. Remove from heat and stir in the cheddar cheese, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper until smooth.
Assemble and Bake
  1. In a greased baking dish, layer half of the sliced potatoes.
  2. Pour half of the cheese sauce over the potatoes.
  3. Repeat with the remaining potatoes and cheese sauce.
  4. Cover with aluminum foil and bake for 45 minutes.
  5. Remove the foil and bake for an additional 15 minutes until golden and bubbly.
