Ingredients
  

For the Meatballs
  • 1 lb ground beef or a mix of beef and pork
  • 1 cup breadcrumbs preferably Italian seasoned
  • 1/4 cup parmesan cheese grated
  • 1 large egg
  • 2 cloves garlic minced
  • 1 tbsp parsley chopped
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
For the Sauce
  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 onion chopped
  • 3 cloves garlic minced
  • 28 oz canned crushed tomatoes
  • 1 tbsp sugar to balance acidity
  • 1 tsp dried oregano
  • 1 tsp dried basil
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
For the Spaghetti
  • 12 oz spaghetti
  • 2 tbsp salt for pasta water
For Garnish
  • 1/4 cup fresh basil chopped
  • 1/4 cup parmesan cheese grated

Method
 

Prepare the Meatballs
  1. Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C).
  2. In a mixing bowl, combine ground beef, breadcrumbs, parmesan cheese, egg, minced garlic, parsley, salt, and pepper. Mix until well combined.
  3. Form the mixture into meatballs, about 1.5 inches in diameter.
  4. Place the meatballs on a baking sheet and bake for 25-30 minutes or until cooked through.
Make the Sauce
  1. In a large skillet, heat olive oil over medium heat. Add chopped onion and sauté until translucent.
  2. Add minced garlic and cook for an additional minute.
  3. Stir in crushed tomatoes, sugar, oregano, basil, salt, and pepper. Simmer for 20 minutes.
Cook the Spaghetti
  1. In a large pot, bring salted water to a boil. Add spaghetti and cook according to package instructions until al dente.
  2. Drain the spaghetti and return it to the pot.
Combine and Serve
  1. Add the meatballs to the sauce and stir to coat.
  2. Serve the meatballs and sauce over the spaghetti. Garnish with fresh basil and grated parmesan cheese.
