Ingredients

  • 4 cups all-purpose flour 500g
  • 1 cup warm milk 240ml
  • 2 ¼ tsp active dry yeast 7g
  • 3 tbsp granulated sugar 40g
  • ¼ cup unsalted butter, softened 57g
  • 1 tsp salt 5g

Equipment

  • Loaf pan
  • Mixing Bowl
  • Dough scraper
  • Oven

Method

  1. Activate the yeast by warming the milk to about 110°F (43°C). Mix in the yeast and 1 tsp of sugar; let it sit for 5 minutes until frothy.
  2. In a large bowl, combine flour, remaining sugar, and salt. Add activated yeast mixture and melted butter; mix until a shaggy dough forms.
  3. Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  4. Place the kneaded dough in an oiled bowl, cover with a damp cloth, and let it rise in a warm spot until doubled in size (about 1 hour).
  5. Punch down the dough, shape it into a loaf, and place seam-side down in a greased loaf pan. Let it rise again until it peeks over the edge of the pan (about 30 minutes).
  6. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Bake for 30-35 minutes until golden brown. Cool slightly before slicing.
